A wired connection is provided by an Ethernet cable. Most commonly, these are used by desktop computers and other equipment you don't move around often.
If you don't connect a cable between your computer and your Range Extender, you are using a Wireless connection.
4 Initial Setup
- Open your preferred browser.
- In the Address bar, type in extender.linksys.com and press Enter or Return.
- Read the End User License Agreement carefully, then place a checkmark next to it to indicate you accept it. Place a check next to Automatic Software Updates so you don't have to worry about updating the device in the future. Then, select Start Setup.
- You'll be asked how you want to use your Range Extender. The normal way is to use the device to receive Wi-Fi and relay the connection to devices further away from your router than the router can reach. Select Next under "As a wireless range extender" to continue.
- Select your home Wi-Fi connection from the list.
- Enter your Wi-Fi password for your home Wi-Fi connection, then select Next.
- You'll be asked to select a name for your extended network. Normally it will use your home network's name, with "_Ext" at the end. Enter a password for the Wi-Fi network coming from your range extender, then select Next.
You can set the password on your extended network to be the same as your main Wi-Fi Network, so you don't have to remember extra passwords.
- You may be shown a screen letting you know if your Range Extender is too far or too close. We will take care of moving the extender after we're done setting it up. Select Connect anyway.
- You'll be asked for an admin password. This password is used to make changes to the setup of your Range Extender in the future. Create a password, enter it twice, then select Save.
This password won't be used for connecting to your device, only for setting up the Range Extender itself. Make this password something you will remember, but is hard for others to guess.
- You'll be asked to register your new Range Extender. Enter your Email address, then select Next.
- Your range extender will restart with the information and settings you've given it. Then, you'll be asked to connect to your range extender to continue.
6 Location
Once fully setup, you can relocate your Range Extender to an ideal location in your home. Simply plug it in in the new location; it will save all the settings you entered and be operational a few minutes after you plug it in.
When placing your range extender, there's a couple things to consider:
- At least six feet from your router.
- About half way between your router, and the devices having problems with their Wi-Fi connection.
